Windows 8 will be released to manufacturing (RTM) in the first week of August 2012 and be generally available in October.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer set up the announcement with typical enthusiasm. “Windows 8 is simply the biggest deal from our company in 17 years,” Steve Ballmer said.

In a move to keep Windows 7 sales going, Microsoft also announced that new buyers of Windows 7 will be eligible for a £14.99 upgrade to Windows 8 Pro.

Enterprise customers who use volume licensing will be able to acquire the new OS from August too

UPDATE: 26th of October has been now announced as the official release date
